Allonby is a wide open beach in West Cumbria. The nuclear power point at Sellafield
is not far away and I wouldn’t rush to bathe in the water. I was determined to come
away with something of beauty. We made line sculptures in the sand for people to
enjoy over the following few days. And I noticed these wonderful sandstone pebbles
with a wide open texture and smooth rounded eroded shapes. The tide comes in quickly
at Allonby and the water displayed white lines and foamy bubbles over the stones.
These three paintings are drawn as portraits, showing the individual character and
context of each stone.
