The Howk is probably my favourite place in the UK. Ever since I moved to Caldbeck in 1975 I have taken many friends and visitors up the short walk to an old abandoned bobbin mill set in a gorge. It is still a surprise when I approach the place. I had to include a waterline from here, one that had a lot of twists in it as the water cascades down a narrow hidden ravine in the rocks above Caldbeck. The Howk has now been preserved, tidied up a lot. Despite this gentrification, it is still a wonderful place and well worth a visit.
