There is an area to the south of Caldbeck in Cumbria, covering the western face of High Pike fell which is wide and open fellside. Ever since I first saw this, from the high vantage point of Carrock Fell, the road dropping swiftly into the valley where the village spreads out like twisted arms, I have wanted to capture its panorama. Some years ago I painted a farm track from here that wound away into the distance. And on this walk I noticed a pathway that did the same thing, but this time the path was infested by cut straw. These lines make us look further. I must credit the artist, Richard Long, for showing me this with his work.
