In the Lake District, waterfalls are known as forces. Aira Force is a great favourite of mine, with its long, upwardly winding pathway, from the National Trust car park at Ullswater lakeside, to the point at which the water is squeezed through a narrow gap in the rock. Above that point there is a very different river, relatively calm and ponderous. At the apex, the water suddenly kicks into life, turning into a soft, boiling froth. I am always drawn to the purity of white water.
